How to Use Blender for 3D Modeling: First Model, Hotkeys and Exports

Blender is free and runs on modest hardware, but the first week goes into a shortcut-driven interface rather than pretty models. Here is the interface in five minutes, a first-model walkthrough, the hotkeys worth memorising and how to pick an export format.

Blender is the usual answer when someone asks how to start 3D modeling without paying for software. It is free, open source, installs in a few hundred megabytes and runs on a laptop with integrated graphics. The trade-off is an interface built around shortcuts and modal operators.

This walkthrough answers the questions beginners ask, in order: whether Blender is worth the time, how the interface is laid out, what a first model looks like from empty scene to saved file, and how to get the result into an engine or a slicer. Check the release notes for the build you installed before trusting any shortcut, because key defaults move between versions.

Is Blender worth learning, and how long is the ramp?

It depends on what you want to make. A hard-surface prop such as a crate, a mug or a simple weapon takes most beginners a weekend of evenings to model, unwrap and texture. A believable character takes months, because the hard part is proportion, silhouette and edge flow rather than the software, and those skills transfer to ZBrush, Maya or 3ds Max.

Blender is also the cheapest way to test whether you enjoy the work. Game art, product visualisation and animation teams use it, and a portfolio of finished models matters more to a hiring lead than the package that produced them.

The interface in five minutes

The default startup file divides one window into four regions. Top-left is the 3D Viewport, where the object lives. Top-right is the Outliner, the list of every object in the scene. Bottom is the Timeline, which only matters once you animate. Right is the Properties editor, a stack of tabbed panels for render settings, resolution, modifiers, materials and object transforms.

Three facts remove most of the early confusion. Left click selects, middle drag orbits, the wheel zooms, and the numpad jumps to named views such as Numpad 1 for front. Tab toggles between Object Mode and Edit Mode, and nearly everything that changes geometry happens in Edit Mode. The top bar workspaces swap the layout to a task preset.

Your first model: a low-poly mug from an empty scene

Start with File, New, General, then build with primitives and modifiers: block out the volume, then cut and refine it.

Press X to delete the cube, then Shift+A and add a Cylinder with 24 vertices as the mug body.
Press S to scale it to roughly 80 mm wide if you plan to print it, then S and Z to set the height. Type a number and press Enter for an exact value.
Hold Ctrl and press Numpad 2 twice to rotate the cylinder 90 degrees about X so it stands on the Z axis.
Enter Edit Mode with Tab, select the top face and press I to inset it about 3 mm. That inset is the wall thickness; press E and pull the face down to hollow the interior.
Add a torus with Shift+A, rotate and scale it until it sits against the side as a handle, then merge the two objects with Ctrl+J.
In Object Mode add a Bevel modifier at about 0.4 mm and one level of Subdivision Surface, so edges soften without losing the silhouette.
Save with Ctrl+S. For printing, export STL from File, Export and check that the mesh is manifold; for engines, export GLB so the material travels with it.

Apply scale, and let modifiers handle the repetition

An object can read 80 mm in the viewport while its mesh data still carries a scale factor. Press Ctrl+A in Object Mode and choose Scale to bake the transform into the vertices, before adding a bevel or exporting.
Modifiers are non-destructive operations stacked on an object. Mirror halves the effort on anything symmetrical, Bevel rounds only the sharp corners, Subdivision Surface smooths a cage into a dense surface, and Booleans cut holes at the cost of messy topology around the cut.
Watch the status bar under the viewport during any modal operator: it lists the keys that operation is listening for.

Smooth shading and material: finishing the mug

Right-click the object and pick Shade Auto Smooth so the cylinder stays round without smoothing the flat base. Open the Shading workspace, create a Principled BSDF material and set the base colour, leaving roughness in the mid range for ceramic. Assign it before you export, because a GLB carries materials and an STL does not.

Hotkeys worth memorising in the first week

Blender has hundreds of shortcuts, but a small set covers most modeling work. A modal operator keeps its settings live until you confirm it, so you can adjust an extrusion or a bevel while watching the result instead of filling in a dialog.

Getting the model out: which export format to choose

Blender exports through File, Export, and the format list is longer than most beginners need. Three decisions cover nearly every case. For an engine or web viewer, GLB or glTF carries materials, normals and usually the texture in one file. For a slicer or print service, STL is geometry only, while 3MF keeps units, colour and multiple objects. For rigged assets, take FBX or USDZ as the receiving tool requires.

Two settings cause most export surprises. Unit scale and the scene unit system decide whether your 80 mm mug arrives as 80 mm or as 80 metres, so set them before modeling a print part. Forward and up axis decide whether the model lands on its feet in the target engine, and Blender exports to many formats with Y up.

Where manual modeling stops being the right answer

Plenty of beginners do not want to model at all. They have one photo of a person, or one sentence describing a creature, and they want a mesh today. That is a different job: generated meshes often arrive with uneven triangle distribution and floating fragments, while a hand-built model is slow but predictable.
