Free Online GLB to OBJ Converter
This is the reverse of the usual direction: unpack a web-ready GLB back into an OBJ your modelling tool can edit. Materials come across as an MTL file.
Note that OBJ cannot carry PBR. Metallic and roughness values are flattened into classic diffuse and specular, so a GLB that looked metallic will read as a plain surface until you rebuild the shader.

How to convert GLB to OBJ
Select your GLB file
Choose one model and its companion material, buffer and image files when applicable. The combined upload limit is 50 MB.
Check the preview and options
Check orientation, dimensions and required resources. Image reliefs are previewed after conversion; set their width and depth first.
Convert and download OBJ
Convert, then inspect the result and any warnings. Textured OBJ results download as a ZIP containing the OBJ, MTL and textures.
Why choose this converter
Real mesh conversion
Geometry is parsed and exported into the destination format.
Inspect the result
Use the preview, output statistics and format warnings to check the conversion.
Server conversion
A server mesh pipeline converts geometry. OBJ resources are returned together in a ZIP.
Static model scope
Animations, rigs, CAD construction history and unsupported material extensions are outside this converter's scope.
What changes in this conversion
- Animation will be dropped.
- Unit information will be dropped.
- The result is a triangle mesh, so exact analytic surfaces become faceted.
What Is a GLB File? / OBJ
GLB
GLB is the single-file binary flavour of glTF, often called the JPEG of 3D. Geometry, PBR materials, textures and animation are packed into one buffer, so a model arrives complete with no side-car files. It is the default delivery format for the web and increasingly for game engines.
- One file carries geometry, PBR materials and textures
- Loads directly in browsers and game engines
- Compact thanks to binary buffers
- Not human-readable
- Editing usually means round-tripping through a DCC tool
- Some legacy pipelines still expect OBJ or FBX
OBJ
OBJ is a plain-text geometry format from Wavefront. It stores vertex positions, texture coordinates, normals and faces, and references a companion .mtl file for materials and texture maps. Because it is text, it is human-readable and trivially editable, but also noticeably larger than binary alternatives.
- Readable and editable as text
- Supports materials and texture maps via MTL
- Broad support in DCC tools
- Needs the .mtl and texture files to look right
- Large file size for dense meshes
- No animation, no units, no scene graph
GLB vs OBJ

| Best for 3D printing | No | Yes |
| Best for the web | Yes | No |
| Best for game engines | Yes | Yes |
Before you convert
- Confirm the source really is GLB — a renamed file will not parse.
- Check the bounding box in the preview; conversion does not fix a wrong scale.
- Decimate dense meshes before converting if the target is a slicer.
Common problems
The upload is rejected
Check the file really is GLB and is under 50MB.
The preview is empty
The file is probably corrupt or uses an unsupported feature. Re-export it from the source application.
The result looks different from the original
Read the format notes above — some loss is inherent to the target format, not a conversion error.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert GLB to OBJ here?
Yes. Select the file and any companion resources, check the preview, then convert and download.
Is an account or payment needed?
No. Available conversions are free and do not require an account.
What is the file size limit?
50 MB combined, with at most one model and 63 companion files.
Will materials and textures survive?
Basic materials and embedded textures are preserved where supported. Include MTL/BIN/images with the source; inspect the result for differences. Textured OBJ downloads include companion resources in a ZIP.
Are animation and rigs preserved?
No animation or rig preservation is promised. Browser conversions export static meshes; check proprietary material features and real-world scale in the result.
Are uploaded models published?
No. Conversion does not add models to the public gallery. Browser USDZ export stays local; server conversions use temporary download files.
