Frequently Asked Questions

Engines, credits, exporting, printing, the API and accounts — answered with the numbers that actually apply.

Basics

What is Open3DAI?

A web app for generating 3D models from text or images, with several generation engines behind one account. You write a prompt or upload a photo once, run it through the local engine and any configured third-party engine, compare the meshes side by side, and export GLB, glTF, OBJ, STL, PLY or 3MF.

Which engines does it use?

A built-in local procedural engine that is always available, plus optional adapters for Tripo3D, Meshy, Rodin and Hitem3D. Each adapter runs only when the operator has configured that provider's API key.

Is there a free tier?

Yes. Signing up grants welcome credits with no credit card, and every export format including STL, 3MF and GLB is available on Free. Credits pay for generation, not for the format you choose.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The Studio, the viewers, the STL editor and the 3D text generator all run in the browser. The viewers and the editor parse files locally in the tab, so those files are never uploaded.

In what order does a generation run?

Geometry, then UV unwrapping, then texture baking, then finalising. The task reports each stage separately, so a slow generation visibly sits in one stage rather than looking stalled.

What do the properties tell me?

Vertex count, triangle count, dimensions, volume, surface area, material count, file size, and whether the mesh is watertight and manifold. Those last two are the ones that decide whether a slicer will produce a solid part.

Engines

Which engine should I pick?

Rigid and geometric parts: the local engine, because parametric construction gives clean walls and predictable watertightness. Characters and creatures: Tripo3D. Statues, busts, portraits and lithophanes: Hitem3D. Textured standalone props: Meshy. Realistic organic subjects: Rodin.

What is the local engine, exactly?

A procedural generator that builds parametric geometry from the prompt deterministically, then unwraps UVs and writes PBR maps. It is not a trained neural network, it needs no API key, and the same prompt produces the same mesh every time.

Why do I see engines marked as not configured?

Because their API keys are not set on this deployment. They cannot be selected and no request is sent to them. The local engine is always available, so generation never depends on a third-party key.

How does multi-model comparison work?

One input is sent to every engine you select, with the same mode, style preset, texture options and speed or quality setting. Results open in one viewport with identical camera and shading, and you keep the one you want.

Is Open3DAI affiliated with Tripo3D, Meshy, Rodin or Hitem3D?

No. They are independent third-party services and their names are trademarks of their respective owners. They are reached through adapters, and each has a profile page here describing what it is good at.

What happens when a third-party engine fails?

That task fails and its credits are refunded automatically; a task is charged at most once. Results from the other engines in the same comparison are unaffected, so one provider outage does not waste the run.

Credits and billing

How much does a generation cost?

About 10 credits for a standard text-to-3D or image-to-3D generation on the base engine. AI texturing adds about 4 credits and HD texture another 4. Quality mode costs more than Speed mode. Each additional engine in a comparison charges the base cost again.

What do the plans include?

Free grants welcome credits at signup. Starter includes 1,000 credits per month, Pro 3,500, and Max 18,000. Yearly billing saves 20 percent compared with paying monthly, and all paid plans include a commercial licence.

Can I buy credits without subscribing?

Yes. One-time packs of 1,000, 3,500 and 18,000 credits are available with no subscription, and they draw from the same pool as plan credits.

Do unused credits roll over?

No. Unused credits do not carry into the next billing period, so it is worth sizing the plan to what you actually generate rather than stockpiling.

What happens if a generation fails?

The credits are refunded and the task is marked failed. A task is settled at most once: success charges, failure refunds, and the balance never goes negative.

Where can I see what I spent?

In credit history on the account page. Every entry records the delta, the reason, the balance after the change and the task it belongs to, so you can see which engine and which mode consumed the credits.

Export, formats and printing

Which formats can I export?

GLB, glTF, OBJ, STL, PLY and 3MF, on every plan including Free. STL and 3MF are the printing formats, GLB is the web and game-engine format, OBJ suits DCC tools and PLY suits scan-style pipelines.

Does exporting cost credits?

No. Exporting a finished generation is free and can be repeated. Export the same model as GLB for the web and STL for the printer without spending anything extra.

What should I export for 3D printing?

STL for a single part, 3MF when the model has multiple objects, colour, or needs units that survive the export. Check the watertight and manifold flags in the properties panel first.

Can I export STEP, IGES or FBX?

No. STEP, IGES, SLDPRT, X_T, DWG, SKP and IFC are CAD formats with no open Python writer here, and FBX is proprietary and not written server-side. Export GLB or OBJ and convert inside the tool that needs the CAD format.

How do the 48 converters differ from generation?

A converter rewrites an existing mesh into another mesh format — the geometry is already three-dimensional. Generation creates the geometry. The converters also state what a conversion will lose before you run it, such as colour or units.

Do the browser tools upload my file?

No. The viewers and the STL editor parse files locally in the browser tab. Converting between formats that need server-side processing does upload the file, and the conversion page says which path applies.

Workflow and API

How should I write a prompt?

Name the object, the style, the material and a size in millimetres. "A cast-iron frying pan, 260 mm across, thick rim, game-ready" gives the engine four decisions it can get right. Add wall thickness or a flat base when the part will be printed.

What makes a good reference image?

One subject on a plain background, evenly lit, filling most of the frame. Avoid transparency, thin structures and hard shadows, which get baked into the geometry as guesses.

When do I need multiview instead of one image?

When the back of the object matters. Multiview needs at least two photos of the same object from different angles and reconstructs the sides a single photo would have to invent.

How does batch mode work?

Upload several images and each creates one independent generation with its own progress, result and credit charge. It suits a product range; you can re-run a single image without touching the rest of the batch.

Is there an API?

Yes. A REST API with API keys and scopes, idempotency keys to make retries safe, webhooks for completion events and hourly rate limits. Keys are created in Account, shown once, and stored only as a hash.

Account, privacy and licensing

Who owns the models I generate?

You do. Signed-in users keep ownership of what they generate, and every paid plan includes a commercial licence. You are responsible for holding the rights to any image or file you upload.

Are my uploads public?

New generations default to Private visibility, so they appear only in your account. Making an asset public is an explicit choice and can be reversed at any time.

How do I pay now?

Paid purchases are not open yet. Registration credits and administrator grants can be used for generation. A payment provider must be configured before checkout is enabled.

Can I cancel a subscription?

Yes, from the account page. Cancelling stops the next renewal; the credits already granted for the current period remain usable until that period ends and do not roll over afterwards.

How do I delete my data?

Delete individual assets from the assets page, which removes the stored files, or email /contact to close the account. Deletion requests are handled within 30 days, and ledger rows are kept afterwards for accounting only.
