Rodin, Meshy, Tripo, Sloyd, Hunyuan3D 2.x and TRELLIS 2 judged on the four things a game team cares about: edge flow, retopology cost, engine handoff and texture output.
A generated mesh can survive a turntable render and still be useless in a game: no edge loops where the shoulder bends, tens of thousands of triangles on a prop that should weigh a few thousand, UV islands scattered across one stretched atlas, an FBX that imports at a hundredth of the expected scale. Details like those decide whether a generator is useful for game work, not the preview image.
This comparison covers six tools game teams reach for: Rodin, Meshy, Tripo, Sloyd and the open-weight Hunyuan3D 2.x and TRELLIS 2 stacks. Each is judged on the topology it returns, how much retopology remains, how cleanly the file lands in Unity, Unreal or Godot, and what the textures and the bill look like.
The verdicts are editorial. They rest on the criteria below, on vendor documentation and on ordinary hands-on use of the hosted tiers. No numeric score appears, because a score would claim a precision this article does not have.
Topology comes first, because a game mesh has to deform: edge loops around the joints, not an even field of triangles. Second is budget, since a prop arriving at a hundred thousand triangles is a prop somebody has to decimate, and decimation plus UV repair costs an artist an hour or two. Third is the handoff: format, scale, axis and material slots on import. Fourth is texture output, where a PBR set beats a vertex-coloured preview.
Everything below is editorial judgement from public information and hands-on use, not a measured benchmark. Engine support, credit prices and licence terms change; verify them on the vendor page before committing a budget.
| Tool | Input | Formats the vendor lists | Where it earns its place |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rodin (Hyper3D) | text, image, multiview | GLB, FBX, OBJ, USDZ, STL | hero assets needing surface quality |
| Meshy | text, image | GLB, FBX, OBJ, USDZ, STL | props with PBR maps |
| Tripo | text, image, multiview | GLB, FBX, OBJ, USDZ, STL | fast iteration, API batches |
| Sloyd | text, parameter sliders | FBX, OBJ, GLB | modular low-poly kit pieces |
| Hunyuan3D 2.x weights | image, multiview | OBJ, GLB through a ComfyUI or script pipeline | self-hosted batches, no per-asset fee |
| TRELLIS 2 weights | image, multiview | GLB, OBJ through ComfyUI nodes | repeatable, scripted local pipelines |
Hosted generators optimise for a convincing preview, and the cheapest route there is a dense, evenly triangulated surface: the wrong shape for anything that will be rigged. Edge loops around a shoulder or knee let the surface bend without pinching; the near-isotropic triangle field a neural model produces has no such structure, so deformation creases and the silhouette collapses. Generated characters typically arrive between 20k and 100k triangles with no usable edge flow, and deforming parts need rebuilding by hand.
Open the mesh in Blender, switch to wireframe and follow the loops. A game-ready torso has rings around the ribcage continuing into the arm; a hand has loops that follow the knuckles. If the wires ricochet across the surface in short random segments, no weight painting will make the elbow bend cleanly, and rigging should wait until after retopology. The same pass shows what can be kept: hard-surface props rarely need new topology, since nothing deforms, and their dense mesh only needs decimation.
The engines disagree about conventions. Unity and Unreal both treat one unit as one metre, but Unity takes FBX natively while GLB needs a package such as glTFast or UnityGLTF; Unreal imports FBX and reaches glTF through Interchange; Godot 4 imports GLB directly and expects FBX to be converted, usually with FBX2glTF. glTF is Y-up and right-handed, Unreal Z-up and left-handed, Blender Z-up and right-handed, so one file can arrive rotated, mirrored or scaled by 0.01.
Meshy, Tripo and Rodin return baked PBR map sets, typically albedo, roughness, metallic and normal at 1K or 2K on entry tiers and up to 4K higher up, packed against a single UV atlas. For props and environment kits that is a genuine saving, though the seam still needs checking where it crosses a visible face. Vertex-coloured output rarely survives a stylised shader, and untextured output means the UV work is still ahead.
| Output type | What arrives | Typical fix in the DCC tool | Good enough for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baked PBR atlas | 1K-2K albedo, normal, roughness, metallic maps on one UV set | seam cleanup where it crosses a visible face | props, environment kits, first-pass characters |
| Single baked colour map | one diffuse texture, no roughness or metallic variation | add roughness and metallic values by hand | stylised props and mobile targets |
| Vertex colour only | per-vertex tint, no UVs, no maps | unwrap and bake before any textured shader | blockouts, greybox levels, colour studies |
| No texture | geometry plus a default material | full UV unwrap, bake and material build | collision meshes, decimation bases, print-oriented output |
Not every asset needs a map set. Collision hulls, distant LODs, greybox modules and most print-oriented exports are single-material by nature, so a generator returning clean geometry with no texture is not failing those jobs. The waste is paying for texture passes on assets that will be flat-shaded anyway, or on meshes about to be retopologised into another UV layout.
Hosted pricing is a subscription with a monthly credit allowance. Entry tiers typically sit between 15 and 30 US dollars a month, studio tiers between 60 and 120, and every generation or texture pass burns credits, so the real cost driver is how many tries a finished asset takes. Open-weight stacks such as Hunyuan3D 2.x and TRELLIS 2 invert the model: no per-asset fee, but GPU time and maintenance are yours, and batch size is capped by your own VRAM.
| Option | How it is billed | Real cost driver | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted entry tier | monthly subscription plus credits | iterations per finished asset | a few assets a week, no suitable GPU |
| Hosted studio tier | higher subscription, commercial terms | seats, concurrency and licence scope | commercial shipping with licence review |
| API batch tier | credits per API generation | prompt and retry count | dozens of similar props per run |
| Local open-weight stack | your own GPU, no per-asset fee | electricity, VRAM and maintenance time | steady work, or client assets that stay on your machine |
Open3DAI occupies a different slot. This deployment runs one local procedural generation engine and can connect third-party engines through optional API adapters that use your own keys. Its contribution to a game pipeline is running the same prompt or image through the engines you have connected and comparing results side by side before exporting to GLB, glTF, OBJ, STL, PLY or 3MF, plus 48 format converters, 12 browser tools and a REST API. It does not rig, animate, retopologise, unwrap UVs or guarantee a watertight mesh; those jobs still belong to Blender, Maya or ZBrush. Generate and compare here, then finish in the DCC tool.
None of them removes retopology, so pick on base shape and surface quality rather than on preview looks: Rodin is the strongest of this group for a single hero character, while Meshy and Tripo win on iteration speed when you are exploring silhouettes. Whichever you choose, plan a manual retopology pass for the deforming parts, then rig in Blender or Maya. Some hosted services now offer auto-rigging for simple bipeds, which can be enough for a prototype but rarely survives a production animation set.
For hard-surface props, often yes: a crate, a barrel or a wall module does not deform, so a dense triangle mesh can go straight into the engine after decimation. For anything with a skeleton, no. Generated meshes arrive with an even triangle field instead of edge loops around joints, and that is exactly what makes a shoulder or knee bend badly. Budget an hour or two of retopology per deforming asset and treat the generator as a fast blockout stage.
Check what each engine imports natively before generating. Unity takes FBX directly and needs a package such as glTFast or UnityGLTF for GLB; Unreal imports FBX and supports glTF through Interchange and the glTF importer plugin; Godot 4 imports GLB and glTF and wants FBX converted, usually with FBX2glTF. Blender remains the cheapest converter between all of them. Verify scale and axis after every import, because glTF is Y-up and right-handed while Unreal is Z-up and left-handed.
Usually yes for props and environment pieces, with a caveat about the seam. Meshy, Tripo and Rodin return albedo, roughness, metallic and normal maps at 1K or 2K on entry tiers, sometimes 4K higher up, mapped to a single UV atlas. The maps are baked, so repainting one region means touching the whole atlas; and if a seam crosses a visible face you will see it in engine lighting. For stylised projects, a flat material built by hand often looks more consistent than a photo-derived bake.
It depends on volume and on hardware you already own. Hunyuan3D 2.x and TRELLIS 2 carry no per-asset fee, but they consume GPU time, VRAM and maintenance weekends, and a batch run is bounded by your own card. A hosted entry tier typically costs 15 to 30 US dollars a month and gets you running in minutes. Local wins when you generate continuously, when a client forbids uploading assets to a third party, or when you need scripted, repeatable runs; hosted wins for occasional work and for anyone without a suitable GPU.
It generates and compares, and it does not finish the asset. This deployment runs one local procedural generation engine plus optional third-party engine adapters that use your own API keys, so you can push the same prompt or image through several engines and compare results before exporting to GLB, glTF, OBJ, STL, PLY or 3MF, with 48 format converters, 12 browser tools and a REST API alongside. It does not rig, animate, retopologise, unwrap UVs, or guarantee a watertight mesh, so retopology and texturing polish still happen in Blender, Maya or ZBrush.
Send the same prompt or image to several engines, compare the meshes side by side, then export GLB, glTF, OBJ, STL, PLY or 3MF. Creating an account grants free credits and needs no card.
An editorial ranking of ten hosted services and open-weight engines, with the criteria stated up front, two comparison tables, and a plain account of the cleanup every generated mesh still needs.
The short answer is that Meshy covers the most pipeline steps and Tripo returns the geometry most people keep. The longer answer is that both picks rest on three criteria you can test yourself in one afternoon.
Surface Material Override in the editor, runtime swaps from GDScript, and the shared-resource behaviour that repaints every copy of a model — plus the PBR values and import settings that make the result hold up.
