OpenSCAD is the reference implementation of the first family: a small language of primitives, boolean operations and transformations that compiles to a mesh. Parameters are variables at the top of the file, the special variable $fn controls how round a circle looks, and the Customizer turns those variables into a form. It exports STL and 3MF for printing, plus DXF and SVG for laser cutting. What it lacks is a solid kernel: fillets are approximations, and there is no STEP output.
Both libraries drive the OpenCASCADE kernel from Python, so a script can produce a genuine B-rep solid: reliable fillets, shells and draft angles, and a STEP file a machinist can open. The trade is setup — a Python environment and a text editor instead of a two-click installer, and debugging that means debugging code. For families of dimensioned parts, one bracket in eight sizes or a plate with a moving hole pattern, it pays for itself.
FreeCAD is the only fully offline, fully open option here. Sketcher and PartDesign give you an ordinary feature tree, a spreadsheet with named expressions gives you parameters, and the Python console can drive a whole document. It exports STEP and IGES alongside STL and 3MF. The costs are real: the interface takes a week of evenings to feel natural, and long feature chains can break when an upstream sketch is renamed — reduced over the years, but not removed.
Onshape puts the same modelling style in a browser tab. Documents carry version history and branching, configurations hold dozens of parameter sets inside one design, and FeatureScript adds new parametric features written in a JavaScript-like language. It runs on a thin laptop but needs a network connection for everything. On the free plan the vendor makes documents public, so read the current terms.
Fusion 360 is the closest thing to a default where CAD and CAM meet: a timeline feature tree, a parameters table driven from a CSV, and toolpaths in the same document. The personal-use licence restricts commercial work and some exporters, and those terms have changed more than once, so the vendor page is the reliable source. If your parts end up on a CNC rather than a print bed, that integration is the argument.
Blender's Geometry Nodes treat a mesh as the result of a node graph, so height, twist, wall thickness and repetition counts become inputs you can expose and sweep. For procedural variation — vases, lattice panels, terrain, scattered detail — it is the strongest option here, and for a hole that must sit exactly 3.2 mm from an edge it is one of the weakest. Tinkercad Codeblocks sits at the opposite end: Scratch-style blocks, a small feature set, limited precision, and the shortest route from never having modelled to an STL in a slicer.
AI generators such as Open3DAI, Meshy, Tripo and Rodin solve a different problem: they propose a mesh from a prompt or an image instead of solving constraints. Open3DAI runs one local procedural engine and can call third-party engines through API adapters you connect with your own keys, so one prompt can be compared across the available engines before export. It covers text-to-3D, image-to-3D and multiview input, AI texturing, and export to GLB, glTF, OBJ, STL, PLY and 3MF, plus 48 format converters, 12 browser tools and a REST API. It does not produce CAD-quality parametric solids, does not do auto-retopology or UV unwrapping, and does not promise a watertight, print-ready mesh with no cleanup. For a figurine or prop that is a fair bargain; for a bracket that bolts to a motor, it is the wrong tool.

Learning-curve ratings here are editorial judgement based on how quickly a first useful model appears, not measurement. Version numbers, export options, licence terms, engine availability and credit pricing all change, so check the vendor page before committing a budget.
Not quite. As the site presents it, a parameter form sits on top of a script template, so the model is rebuilt from values rather than edited by hand. That is the same family of idea as OpenSCAD, but the tool lives on the site that hosts it, the parameters are fixed by whoever published the model, and the output is a print mesh rather than a STEP solid. If you want your own parameters and your own files on your own disk, run a script tool locally.
