A 3D printed figure is a small object with a job: stand on a shelf or a tabletop, hold a pose, and keep a face readable from arm's length. The printer, the resin and the paint all matter, but the mesh decides most of the outcome, and the mesh is where beginners lose the most evenings.
This tutorial answers four questions in order: what you are building, how to get a usable mesh, how to repair it before a slicer sees it, and which process to run it on. Numbers are typical ranges, not laboratory measurements, and engine versions, credit prices and resin formulations change, so check vendor pages before you spend.
Decide the size in millimetres first. Tabletop figures sit around 28-32 mm to the eye line, display figures usually run 1:12 to 1:6 scale, roughly 150-300 mm tall, and busts live between 1:4 and 1:2. Those sizes need different meshes: soft hands disappear at 28 mm, while a 1:6 portrait fails on the nose and the eyelids. Typical printed bases are 3-5 mm thick and 40-60 mm across at display scale, and the contact area decides whether the figure still stands upright a year later. Two contact points, or a 2 mm brass pin through the foot, remove most of the wobble.
All four routes end with a mesh in your project folder. They differ in what you supply, how much of the result you can trust, and how long you spend fixing it.

Generators reconstruct a shape from the views they are given, so the pictures matter more than the prompt wording. Front, side and back shots at the same distance are the classic input, and multiview support in tools such as TRELLIS 2, Hunyuan3D and Open3DAI lets the model reason across them, rather than guess the back of the head. A hosted endpoint typically returns a textured mesh in tens of seconds. What arrives is a surface shell with no guaranteed wall thickness, so export GLB or OBJ and decimate to roughly 300k-800k triangles before repair.
Text-to-3D is fastest at proportions. Prompt for silhouette, clothing and pose, then treat the result as a maquette. In Blender, a voxel remesh around 1-2 mm or a Quadriflow retopology pass turns triangle soup into something a sculpt brush can push around; ZBrush DynaMesh does comparable work. Armour plates and weapons come out better as separate primitives joined with Boolean unions, which need manifold inputs, as the next section explains.
Generated meshes are often non-manifold: open boundaries at the neck, self-intersections where a limb meets the body, duplicated vertices along a seam, and zero-area faces that confuse slicing. Blender's 3D-Print Toolbox reports all four in one pass, and Meshmixer's Inspector, Netfabb and Microsoft 3D Builder are the usual repair benches. Thickness matters too: resin holds detail near 0.3 mm, but a dependable wall is 0.8-1.2 mm, and FDM with a 0.4 mm nozzle wants 1.2 mm or more. Fingers, sword tips and cape edges are the features that arrive too thin.

Layer height decides how visible the stair-stepping is: at 0.05 mm a resin figure reads as smooth after one coat of primer, at 0.1 mm the lines show under raking light. On FDM a 0.25 mm nozzle buys finer detail at the price of print time, and 0.4 mm with a 0.08-0.12 mm layer suits a 90 mm figure. Expect roughly 4-8 hours for a 75-90 mm resin figure at 0.05 mm, and 6-12 hours on FDM at 0.1 mm.
In Lychee Slicer or Chitubox, tilt a resin figure 15-30 degrees off vertical so each layer carries a small cross-section. Supports go on the back, the underside of the base and the hidden side of the legs; contact tips around 0.2-0.35 mm hold a 75 mm figure without leaving craters. A hollow model needs 2.5-3.5 mm walls plus drain holes at the lowest point as oriented, or the sealed cavity becomes a suction cup. On FDM, stand the figure upright with tree supports in Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or Cura, set the support gap to 0.15-0.25 mm, and keep part cooling high enough that a thin ankle does not curl.
Wash a resin print in two baths of isopropyl alcohol, then remove supports while the part is still soft, because fully cured resin snaps instead of flexing. Follow the resin maker's cure time; it depends on wall thickness and light source. Sand wet from 400 to 1000 grit, prime in thin coats, seal with gloss varnish before any wash, and finish matte. On FDM, filler primer and a sanding block hide layer lines on flat armour better than on a face, which is why large builds often use resin heads.

Open boundaries at the neck, self-intersecting limbs and features under 0.8 mm are the failures slicers cannot patch, and they show up as voids, fused fingers or a part that splits off the build plate.
STL is the safest handoff to an older slicer because every tool reads it, but it carries no units, colour or material data. 3MF keeps units, multiple objects and print settings, and Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer and PrusaSlicer all handle it. Export 3MF when your slicer supports it, STL when the file goes to someone whose software you do not know.
Material is usually the smallest line item. A 75 mm resin figure typically uses 10-30 mL, and standard resin generally sells in the tens of dollars per litre. FDM figures commonly use 20-50 g of filament at roughly 15-25 dollars per kilogram. Failed prints, supports and test pieces move the real number, so treat these as typical ranges rather than a quote.
FDM is a reasonable choice above roughly 100 mm, and for terrain, vehicles and large creatures where paint covers layer lines. Below that, faces and hands lose too much detail to a 0.4 mm nozzle. A common setup is FDM for the big shapes and bases, resin for heads, hands and small props.
Fused arms come from the source mesh: limbs touch, the generator merges them into one volume, and the slicer cannot separate what is modelled as a single solid. A flat or detail-free back usually means no view of that side existed and the gap was filled in. Fix both in the mesh: separate the arms with a Boolean cut and rebuild the missing side from a real reference.
